08.02.07 Survivor Micronesia – Lies in the Islands

The fans ride to the island and are greeted with a surprise – they are playing against past Survivor players, the Favorites. They welcome each (or almost each) of the favorites with cheers and then the game begins.

Two idols, one for each tribe, are awaiting the person who can find them first. Johnny Fairplay finds the idol but it is the other teams, he then tries to run to his team’s idol but in swoops Yau-Man to steal it away from him(go, Yau-Man! You keep that idol this time). With coaching from Yau-Man, Kathy of the Fans gets the other idol. The twist – the idol can only be used at your first tribal council.

The challenge is wild! After moving a cart through obstacles and assembling a puzzle to build the turnstyle, the Fans are the first to get their wok of flame in the air to WIN.

Back at a well established camp, the Favs divide into groups and Johnny Fairplay believes he has all of the team doing his bidding. He tells the group he wants to go home to be there for his unborn child, he tells the camera he wants to win the million for his child – which is the truth? We’ll never know for sure as Johnny gets only one of his wishes – he gets to go home.

Johnny Fairplay – the first Survivor to be voted out of Survivor Micronesia.

Topics:

  • Do either teams have an advantage?
  • Was Johnny Fairplay telling a lie or the truth when he told his fellow tribesmates he wanted to go home?

Predictions:

  1. DoctorDoom says:

Woo hoo! Welcome back guys. And this was a great first episode. Some highlights I liked:

-Johnny Fairplay back to his lecherous ways.
-Parvati all over James. Hey, it’s consistent with her past gameplay
    - Yau Man knocking Fairplay over to get the idol. Ha!
-The quick building of the favorite’s shelter. Than god you guys have learned by now.
-Yau Man starting a fire with his glasses.
    And last but not lease….
-The Fans won the first challenge!

This season is lookign great already, and I don’t regret that they didn’t do a full All-Star.

  2. BrianAlt says:

Yay! You’re back! Hope you had a nice rest. Didn’t listen yet, probably will on the way home tonight.

  3. GoHskrs says:

Armchair Survivor has returned … and there was much rejoicing!

Fairplay is gone after one episode? What. The. Hell. Why do the first-time contestants never have these pressing personal commitments / issues, but they seem to crop up in the All Stars seasons (Jenna and Sue in Season 8; Jonny Fairplay last night). BTW, per your topics, I first thought his act was contrived, but the more I watched the less I believed it. Who’da thunk it — the most self-absorbed Survivor contestant in history, leaving the game because of his concern for other people. It’s almost enough to make me tear up … almost. 8^)

I was concerned at first about the balance of the game, especially after the Favorites managed to get shelter, fire, and food right away and the Fans did not. As the immunity challenge proved, the balance of power is just fine.

SheHskrs and I both wondered where Cirie was during all the plotting ‘n scheming phase at Malakal? The Romantic Four (James, Parvati, Ozzy, Amanda) were trying to get Eliza, while the Strategic Four (Eliza, Yau, Ami, Jonathan) weren’t sure whether to go after Parvati or Fairplay. It just seems logical that both groups would try to co-opt Cirie, but it seems that neither did.

  4. GoHskrs says:

“Chatty Kathy” — Michael, classic stuff. I don’t know exactly how I’d react to her in real life, but I suspect it would go something like “I’ve never met someone who had no firewall to protect her inner monologue from coming out her mouth. Am I offending you by giving you this Shut Up Button?” 8^)

Marji, the specifics of your labor and delivery room proposal for the next delivery has made me unable to walk this afternoon, because I’m crossing my legs — tightly. FFS, girl, there are just some things you do NOT grab, no matter how much distress you’re in … 8^)

Interesting article here. The producers originally let it be known that there would be 20 returning players, not 10, and Jeff discusses how the potential returnees were calling each other, trying to set up alliances before the final casting calls. Then they messed with the strategy and cut 10 returnees at the last minute.

    picks:
    reward: Airai (fans)
exile: I’ll go with Mike’s Greco-Roman duo of James and Joel (but Michael’s whole wrestling fantasy scenario is just disturbing … 8^)
    immunity: Malakal (favorites)
voted off: Chet, the oldest guy …

  5. I was actually having the greco-roman thing for someone else — not for me. Honest!

Although, it would make good TV. I mean, thought I don’t, a lot of guys watch WWE (WWF) — yes?

  6. Hey M&M!

Glad to have you back. I actually kind of missed you!
Since our last podcast season, I got a graduate assistantship and I spend a lot of time at school working in the lab. Between Armchair Survivor & Keith and the Girl, I manage to keep myself entertained. I often snicker to myself when I know what I am listening to on my headphones, and the poor saps in their Chemistry labs have no clue. Though I am dying to yell “BRUMSKI” one day and see what happens…

    Anyhow…

Know who else I missed? Marj… I know you are with me on this one…

    OZZY!!!
    OZZY!!!
    OZZY!!!

I was a mild Ozzy fan on that season, but when I saw him come out to join the Favorites team this time around… wow! What a cutie!
Don’t get me wrong, James is still magnificent, and his body should be used as a model for a marble sculpture to be placed in the Louvre. But Ozzy is more my type of guy. I will enjoy watching him again this season, except for the tonsil hockey with Amanda. Gross. And it’s just gonna get worse as hair starts growing in and plaque builds up on the teeth.

And as for Jeff – I have a new respect for him after watching him stand out on the side of that helicopter doing his monologue during the opening scene. Yowzah!

This cycle has opened up great. I think we are in for an entertaining 39 days on the island. The dynamics are interesting. I can’t believe that article that GoHskrs posted – scheming before they even got to the island! WOW! I wonder if people from past Survivors will team up with their castmates, which would introduce another set of dynamics. For example, Eliza and Amy didn’t end on the best of notes, right?

I also like Mikey B – he is funny. And Joel = Incredible Hulk. I’m anxious to see how far he goes, and DYING to see a 1-on-1 with James!

As for Johnny Fairplay… whatEVER. I’m glad to see him go. Like you said, I don’t want to see that tired game played again. Get a new shtick. And if you did not know, his baby-momma is Michelle Deighton from America’s Next Top Model. She was the tall blonde that had the flesh eating balteria on her face and thought she was a lesbian? Oh, and she was a wrestler, which could explain either Fairplay’s involvement or maybe how they met.

OK, I don’t agree with you on Kathy giving away her idol, so my picks are…

    Reward = Fans
    Immunity = Favs
    Voted Off = Kathy
Exile Island = Erik & Yau

OH OH OH… I was like “Ami in Playboy?!? WTF!”
So I went and looked it up. It was 1996, which makes more sense. But I was surprised. Lots of airbrushing, but she looked nice. Good for her.

  7. I’m an idoit… I copied and pasted and forgot to change who is voted off…

    My real picks…

    Reward = Fans
    Immunity = Favs
Voted Off = Natalie – because I hate her picture on cbs.com!
Exile Island = Erik & Yau

or on Exile = Parvati and any guy from the Airai tribe to see if she will flirt with them.

  8. Kazza says:

Hey guys, welcome back. So nice to have a favorite show like this return in the midst of the writers strike. What an awesome article from GoHuskers. Thanks! I saw an acquaintance who is a HUGE Survivor fan at a birthday party in November and he filled me in on all the stuff that is playing out. He said they got actual sex footage this season. Ewww. Haven’t listened to the podcast–saving it for Monday when I go back to work.

Gotta say that Jeff was right when he said that the producers got what they deserved out of Fairplay. Sooo glad he’s gone. What the hell was he thinking? He doesn’t go straight home; he goes on vacation at the Losers Lodge for 36 more days. WTF? Who would they have put in Fairplay’s place? Uh, Shane and his “Blockberry” anyone? And they actually wanted Courtney back? How lame!!

Did anyone else notice how the fans are all white? I may be remembering this wrong but that’s what I remember about the episode. For what little they showed of the fans, I think they were all white. What the hell is that all about?

Can’t wait to read the rest of the comments…..

  9. GoHskrs says:

MrCarrino> Although, it would make good TV. I mean,
    MrCarrino> thought I don’t, a lot of guys watch
    MrCarrino> WWE (WWF) — yes?

Of course we do, Michael — but only for the articles!

    (oops, wrong reference … 8^)

  10. Slappy McGee says:

Hey Guys! *cue Welcome Back Kotter theme*

I love the new season so far. Interesting mix of strategies going already.

    1. Margie, you can’t knock Amber and Parvati for their “flirting” strategy ESPECIALLY when they are aligning themselves with the TWO BEST players on the team. That’s just good alliance-forming strategy there. And, remember, Amber would have won with this strategy last time had she not made the terrible move of keeping Todd over Denise.

Regardless, the “flirt” strategy is VERY proven in this game, especially considering the “original” Amber WON A MILLION DOLLARS with this strategy on All-Stars.

    2. Michael, did you actually say to your wife that she “pussied out” by not having a vaginal birth? Son, I can’t imagine what kind of serious shit you must be fielding for that kind of comment! Wow, the balls you are sportin’!!!

    3. Oh, and Johnny Fairplay was indeed a wrestling manager. That’s where he started using his “fairplay” name. So, Margie was right about that.

    4. I think it was a total ruse on Fairplay’s part that simply backfired on him. And even though he will be isolated he can still talk to his wife which he wouldn’t be able to do on the island.

Regardless, I think he didn’t want to leave. I think he just got punked by the others.

I’m looking forward to this season. Should be some fun stuff! Glad you two are back on my ipod.

  11. Hi Michael & Marjie (or is it Margie?)

So glad to have you back. Great show from you two, you are in mid-season form already. I’m not feeling the love for this season…we’ll see. Bad Survivor still beats no Survivor.

I disagree with Kazza – I don’t feel we got our money’s worth from Johnny Fairplay. As much as I don’t like him I do feel he is a very good player, so I expected more. I don’t buy his supposed reason for leaving but really can’t figure it out.

M&M I love the personal stuff, keep it up. Good luck with the call in show – when are you airing??

If anyone is interested the link is to my newest Survivor Audition video.

  12. By the way…

I just listened to the Johnny Fairplay interview with JoAnne & Stacy – it would have been so much better if you guys had done it.

    Keep up the good work!!!

  13. Joe in Cinci says:

    Isn’t Yaoh Man from Indonesia?

  14. Jennifer says:

Survivor Vanuatu was in 2004. Since it’s just barely 2008 now, It’s reasonable for someone to potentially still be a Law student, especially since Eliza would have lost (I think) a term by appearning on Season 9. A law degree takes 3 years of full time education to get, and 4-6 years of education if you’re going part time. I don’t know eliza’s financial situation, but if she needs to work regularly to pay her tuition, then there’s a good chance she’s not going Full time.

  15. Jennifer says:

Oh! Adding to my previous comment, you also need to get a bachelor’s degree before entering law school. If she was still doing her Bachelor’s degree durning Survivor Vanuatu, but was going to enter Law School, they might have just listed her as Law Student anyway. Sorry for the double post, forgot to mention that.

(I’m not arguing any of your other comments about Eliza, just the thing about her not doing anything with her life)

  16. BrianAlt says:

How delusional was ‘Fairplay’? What a boob.

He quit AND it was worse than Jenna! First tribal council? What would he have done if the Favs won the challenge?

Awesome that the Fans won the first one. This season looks GOOOOOD! And I thought it was going to be for shit.

Still better than Apprentice, always was and always will be. ESPECIALLY this season. What a POS that crap is!

  17. Joe in Cinci says:

OMG! I am so happy Survivor is back on and you guys are doing your podcast. I’ve missed it the past few months. I was hoping you were going to do the Apprentice but I can’t have everything. I am enjoying the season so far–the Apprentice that is. I stopped watching it after the Donald/Rosie spats but this season is having excellent TV with all the bickering with the celebs.

Back on topic, I was so pissed when I heard Johnny Fairplay was going to be on this season. Out of all reality shows ever, I detest him over anyone else, including Puck from Real World San Francisco. I don’t know what the hell he was thinking about giving that crap about being a father and wanting to be a father. I’m sure the Faves saw right through it and booted his ass out as soon as they could. It was a good first show and I’m looking forward to more!

Keep up the good work guys! I think the live show is great.

  18. konamouse says:

Haven’t finished listening yet but wanted to run over and say “HI”. I have to miss the first live show because of a prior engagement. And it’s going to be sucky for me on the West Coast – but I still want to participate in the future.

    Back later!
I’m wearing my Pearl Islands buff to work tomorrow in honor of Survivor Thursday.

  19. DoctorDoom says:

Gah my picks! Faves for Immunity and reward,Kathy to be voted off

  20. konamouse says:

I think JFP planned to get out early all along. I’m wondering if he made a side deal with Mark Burnett. Jeff doesn’t like JFP (I heard that JFP got into a fight with Jeff’s brother at the Pearl Island’s Survivor Reunion Show afterparty and was subsequently banned from all other Survivor related functions – or I thought it started when JFP blurted out the “All Stars” Season before Jeff was allowed to reveal it).

Sorry I missed the live show – I’ll get there some point this season (tough when you’re on East Coast & I’m in Vegas).

    Hugs!
